Renjo Base Camp to Gokyo: We woke up at 5:30 am in order to make it over the Renjo Pass (17765 feet). The climb was very long steep and cold. Everest from Renjo Pass It was a very difficult pass and we started to think that we were not going to make it over. One of the guides took a wrong route up and we had to backtrack several hundred meters. This does not sound like much, but at that altitude and how steep the pass was every step we took was pure torment. The hike was covered in large boulders and snow. We no longer had a path to follow and had to scramble had of hand on the large boulder trying to find a suitable path. It took up 3 hours to reach the top of the pass. Simon had altitude sickness and was vomiting at the summit. He took a photo, ate a piece of chocolate and said he had to get off the mountain. We were all not in the best condition; however the altitude was not a major problem for me it was the pure exhaustion of climbing to the top. I don’t know if this was from the altitude of just me using mussels I have not used in years. I was happy to sit on the top and relax my weary legs. The view from Renjo pass was amazing and I took many photos. It is reported to be one of the best views of Everest and all the other mountain ranges when the weather is nice. We lucked out and had clear views of the entire range.
I spent twenty minutes taking photos but soon got very cold and decided to go down to join the others. We were still a three-hour hike from Gokyo where we were going to spend the night. We went down over the steep and loose gravel. Shawna and I broke out our hiking poles and they helped out allot. I was fairly light headed on the way down, it was a delirious downward journey and we stopped several hundred meters below the ridge line to eat and take a quick nap. I woke up feeling much better, and put some Crystal Method on my Ipod and raced to the bottom of the mountain feeling full of energy. The music made Renjo Lake the steep trek down into the Gokyo lake are much more enjoyable. I used my trekking poles as if they were ski poles. The crumbling shale that made the downward journey difficult turned into an alpine ski run with my pretending to ski down. I beet the group by half an hour into camp however the porters had already had our tents set up. I waited for the group and set up the solar chargers. Soon everyone was in, Shawna’s knees were hurting from the steep down hill. Our camp was on the lakes edge. It was an amazing sight, milky blue with towering mountains around it. Soon we all settled down after hot tang to take an afternoon nap in the warm sun baked tents. None of us were feeling 100 percent, we all had headaches, colds and coughs to plague us. After the nap we went to a teahouse to keep warm and to chat with other trekkers. It is nice to see other people again and here there stories. Most of them have come from the east or direct from Namche. I think Gokyo is amazing and is well worth the trip for anyone planning there trek. Most people do not do the Renjo pass, however I think the pain of the hike was worth the views of Everest. It is one of the few places where Everest looks taller that all the other surrounding mountains. I hope to combine some of the photos together into a panoramic view of the entire valley. Many of the other trekkers in the lodge are going up to the other Goyko lakes where the views of Everest are also amazing without the pain of the Renjo climb. I stay up a little late tonight to edit photos, because we get to sleep in to 7am tomorrow, which is always nice because it gives time for the sun to warm up the tent. |
